Palm Tree Lighting That Glows All Season

Palms grow in every corner of San Diego County, from the queen palms of Coronado and Point Loma to the towering fan palms that line drives in Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks Ranch. Each species takes light differently. Smooth trunks suit a tight spiral wrap, while textured trunks look best with a slightly wider pattern that follows the bark.

Near the ocean, salt air and onshore wind are constant. We use outdoor rated lighting, weather sealed connections and secure fastening so wraps stay tight through December. Inland, clear cold nights make warm white lighting look especially brilliant, and we often add canopy uplighting for drama against the night sky.

Palm lighting is most striking as part of a full exterior plan. We coordinate palms with rooflines, entries, landscape trees and pathway lighting, so the whole property reads as one design. For estates with long drives, we light the palms in sequence so arriving guests are guided toward the front door.

Timing and care matter too. Lights go up in early to mid November so they are ready for Thanksgiving gatherings, and every installation runs on timers so the palms glow from dusk without anyone touching a switch. If a strand dims or a storm shifts a wrap, we come back to fix it. In January we remove every light carefully, without damaging the trunk or fronds, and store the lighting off site until next season.

We also think about the view from inside the home. Palms visible from the living room, the pool deck or the primary suite are lit so they glow through the windows, adding warmth to every evening indoors. For homes that entertain often, we can add soft uplighting at the base of key palms so the trunks and canopy read beautifully in photos taken from the patio or the drive.
